Reaction after #SVWTSG: “A really interesting game”

Post-match reaction from the players and coaches after TSG’s 1-1 away draw with Werder Bremen on the 18th Bundesliga matchday.

Julian Nagelsmann: “I can live with a point because of the chances each side had. We were slightly better over 60 minutes, but not by so much that we totally deserved to win. It was a really interesting game. It would’ve been great if Andrej Kramaric could’ve finished off his chance; it would’ve been great for him. Eugen Polanski also had a big chance. But Bremen did, too. Despite missing Nadiem Amiri and Kerem Demirbay, we had two excellent “number eights” on the pitch in Lukas Rupp and Dennis Geiger. But of course we’ll have two fantastic players returning when those two are both fit again.”

Florian Kohfeldt (Werder Bremen head coach): “We were too panicky in possession in the first half, so we made it difficult for ourselves. We didn’t play it down the middle enough. We managed to defend against their long balls well, but we just didn’t have the game under the control so we couldn’t put them under much pressure. It was annoying to concede because lost their players too soon after the set piece. The game has very intense and open after the break. Both teams had chances to snatch the lead. I’m not satisfied with the point because of our position in the table; however, I am happy with our performance – especially in the second half.”

Serge Gnabry: “It was great to be able to play here, even if the crowd weren’t on my side. We can’t be satisfied with the point because we were leading. We didn’t have to concede from the corner. We had the chance to retake the lead afterwards, but Andrej couldn’t convert in a one-on-one with Pavlenka. I think if we scored that, the game would’ve gone differently.”

Oliver Baumann: “At the end of the day, we can be happy with the draw today in Bremen. But we can’t be totally happy with the game. We found our way into the game really well in the first half and took a 1-0 lead, but then we let the opponents back into it. The game was really open after the change of ends and we should have scored a second. On the other hand, we got lucky a few times in defence not to concede a second. We have to defend better in situations like these. We didn’t use our counterattacks so well, unfortunately, and therefore they managed to launch counters against us. I couldn’t see the situation with the corner properly, but I was sure that it was a goal kick because Stevie (Zuber) left it to go out. Even if it was a corner, it doesn’t change the fact that we should have defended better. We want stay high up in the table and we need to play better than we did today in our remaining games to do that. We have to improve”
