Sebastian Rudy: “Scoring a goal would be the cherry on top”

Sebastian Rudy will make his last appearance in TSG colours on Saturday in one final home game. He speaks with achtzehn99.de on his last game against FC Augsburg, his plans for the summer, and his appreciation for the club and its fans.

You’ll play your last game for TSG on Saturday – how does that feel?

Sebastian Rudy: I haven’t quite come to terms with it yet. I think that I’ll only be able to clock it on Saturday and even then maybe after the final whistle. I’m now simply looking forward to the game in which I’d of course like to give my all for the club and the team.

How would your ideal farewell game go?

Rudy: I want to win my last game in a TSG kit, win all three points in front of our own fans, and hopefully achieve a third place finish in the Bundesliga. The cherry on top would of course be scoring a goal to say goodbye.

You’re in an indirect duel with BVB for third place...

Rudy: Bremen, Dortmund’s opponents, also have a chance at finishing in a spot through which they could qualify for the Europa League, so they’re still playing for something. We’re hoping that Werder get a point of BVB at a minimum, so that we still have a big chance of finishing third.

FC Augsburg are battling relegation...

Rudy: If it was just a matter of dignity, then Augsburg could play a bit more freely. Now they have more pressure. As a result I would imagine that they’ll sit back and play for a 0-0, but therein lies our chance of getting a couple of goals. If we take the lead by a goal or two Augsburg will have to react, and who knows what will happen then... After all, we’re four goals behind Dortmund and a few goals would do a lot for us.

What sort of a game can the fans look forward to?

Rudy: We want to win the game at all costs – even better by a clear margin. We’ll give our all to do so, so that even if Dortmund win as well, then we still have the potential to finish third. I’d happy for the game to start off like it did in Bremen (grins). Augsburg and Bremen have similar styles of play, and so I can imagine that we’ll start off very offensively. It could turn out to be another game featuring beautiful football for the fans.

You’ll be playing in the Confederations Cup with Germany’s national team in June. You and Niki are already veterans in the DFB team, but Kerem and Sandro will be playing for the first time. What do you think about them being called up?

Rudy: I’m really excited for Kerem and Sandro. They’ve more than earned it after the way they’ve played this season. Now they have the chance to showcase themselves and have a good tournament. It’s nice that they’ll be there.

What are your plans for the summer?

Rudy: I’m going on holiday as soon as the season is over, then come the international games and the Confederations Cup. After that I’ll probably have two or three weeks off. I’d love to go on holiday again during that time, in order to relax and move to Munich.

Is there something you’d like to share with the fans and the club before you leave?

Rudy: I’ve had seven wonderful years here, with highs and lows. I’m happy to be a part of some records and to have secured international football for next year. The fans’ support has always been superb and they’ve always stood behind us. TSG is a great club and will always have a place in my heart – I’ll never forget my time here. The club has made me who I am today, both as a player and as a person. I can give my thanks.
