On the hunt for first win

Darmstadt have been more attacking than they’re known for in the first few games of the season - that’s a difference from last season. Against Eintracht and Dortmund they defended deeper. Above all, in the games against BVB I saw things which could help us. However, we shouldn’t overstate this game or take Darmstadt easily after their 6-0. I don’t think this result will have any after effects as everyone in Darmstadt realises who they came up against. Darmstadt aren’t easy to play against at their own ground. They change their system in the middle of games so we can’t be sure what to expect.

With Niklas Süle we’ll have to wait to see if he can play. On Sunday, he still had a few problems, whether he’ll play or not will become clearer on Monday as then we’ll be able to see if he can move without pain. Sandro Wagner is also injured, he picked up an ankle problem in the Wolfsburg game after a block tackle. There’s no danger that anything bad has happened but he’s still feeling a little pain.

We’re looking forward to the game in Darmstadt and want the three points. I’m pleased about the improvements we’ve made since the Leipzig game, we’re looking a lot more solid and aren’t allowing our opponents as many chances.

Head-to-head:

Last season’s league fixtures have been the only two occasions where both sides have met in the Bundesliga.  TSG didn’t manage a win in either of those games. The game at the Böllenfalltor finished goalless, while Darmstadt ran out 2-0 winners at the Rhine-Neckar-Arena. This turned out to be Huub Steven’s last game in charge after he retired due to health problems. Julian Nagelsmann took over as his successor.

Opposition form:

SV Darmstadt recorded a convincing win in the DFB Cup against Bremer SV as well as a victory in the Hessen Derby against Eintracht Frankfurt. However, Darmstadt have also been on the receiving end of two defeats, one on matchday 1 of the Bundesliga against FC Köln as well a defeat to Borussia Dortmund on matchday 3. The 6-0 loss to BVB was perhaps a harsh reflexion on the game, as Darmstadt managed to compete for long periods.

Key game:

Darmstadt have followed a clear path ever since their second year in the first division, namely a focus on defensive strength. This is what they are renowned for. Going forward, they rely on counter-attacking football and threats from set pieces. TSG will see a lot of the ball at the Böllenfalltor and so will have to be able to find a way through the home side’s defence. How can TSG expect this? Darmstadt have had just 28% possession in the first three Bundesliga games while registering just 20 shots on their opposition’s goal. This was just as much a TSG had in their game against Wolfsburg.
