Elyounoussi scores for Norway – Johnson & Salihovic play 90 minutes

The World Cup year got up and running on Wednesday, with several TSG players involved with their respective nations. For some, there were important friendlies in preparation for Brazil in the summer, while others played in some interesting international fixtures.

World Cup participants Bosnia-Herzegovina faced Egypt in Innsbruck, Austria. Sejad Salihovic played the whole game in midfield, but his side lost 2-0 to the African nation.

Things didn't go much better for Fabian Johnson and the US national team. They lost 2-0 to Ukraine, with “Johnny” playing the full 90 minutes in left midfield. The match was played in Larnaca in Cyprus, away from the unrest in Ukraine.

Belgium concede late equaliser

The third potential TSG player heading to the World Cup is Koen Casteels, whose Belgium side faced the Ivory Coast in front of 45,000 people in Brussels. The “Red Devils” were leading 2-0 in the second half, but a goal on 75 minutes from Didier Drogba and an injury-time equaliser from former Leeds man Max Gradel denied Belgium victory.

Norway and Tarik Elyounoussi played out a 2-2 draw in the Czech Republic. Hoffenheim's attacker played the whole game and also scored a goal to make it 1-1. “It was a good performance from my team. We had several chances and could have ended up winning the game. I'm delighted with my goal, which also gives me more confidence for the upcoming tasks that I will face at TSG,” said the Norwegian after the game.

Eugen Polanski wasn't as fortunate. His Poland side faced Scotland in Warsaw. In what was somewhat of a dull game, the visitors scored a 77th-minute winner courtesy of Celtic midfielder Scott Brown. The Hoffenheim defensive midfielder had been brought on just minutes before and was unable to help his team find an equaliser as they lost 1-0.

No luck for Volland with U21s

Kevin Volland led the Germany U21s out as captain in their friendly game against Spain on Tuesday. His shot narrowly wide from around 20 yards was one of few dangerous moments from Horst Hrubesch's side. Spain turned up the heat after the break, with Isco and Alvaro Morata scoring the goals in a 2-0 win. Volland had already been substituted off by that point.

“Spain are obviously a good side, but in a year, when we've started to gel, we'll be able to keep up with them,” said the 21-year-old with one eye on the finals of the 2015 European Championship in the Czech Republic.

Germany U20s win round robin

The Germany U20 side with Jeremy Toljan were 3-2 winners against Switzerland, ensuring victory in their round-robin tournament which also includes Poland and Italy. Toljan was brought on at half time with Switzerland leading 2-1 and was able to help Germany turn the game around.

Meanwhile, Jannik Vestergaard celebrated an 8-0 thumping of Estonia with the Denmark U21s, Kenan Karaman didn't make an appearance in the Turkey U21 side's 2-1 loss in Greece and Kevin Akpoguma and Benjamin Trümner played out a 1-1 draw in Italy with the Germany U19s.
