Highs and lows for TSG international players

While TSG faced Darmstadt in a friendly on Friday evening, a total of ten Hoffenheim players represented their countries in World Cup qualifiers, U21 European Championship play-offs or friendlies.

Jannick Vestergaard played on Thursday night for Denmark's U21s and despite playing the entire game he couldn't stop their opponents, Spain, from winning 5-0. That first leg result has left Denmark with only a slim chance of progressing.

WC 2014 Qualification

On Friday, four TSG players were involved in WC qualifiers. Sejad Salihovic was one of those as he played the full game for Bosnia and Herzegovina in their 0-0 draw against Greece. There was also no winner in the encounter between Norway and Switzerland, as Eren Derdiyok played all 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw. Sandro Wieser was the only TSG player to be on the end of a defeat in a WC qualifier, as his Liechtenstein side lost 2-0 to Lithuania. Wieser played 84 minutes. Daniel Williams played for the USA in their 2-1 victory over Antigua and Barbuda. Fabian Johnson didn't travel with the squad as a result of flu.

U21 Euros play-offs

The opening leg of Germany's U21s play-off against Switzerland was a fiercely fought contest. There were no goals though until the 82nd minute. Sebastian Rudy put the Germans in front via the penalty spot, but Switzerland were able to equalise shortly before the final whistle. Kevin Volland was brought on in the 80th minute, but Stefan Thesker wasn't involved. The return leg is on Tuesday at 17.30 CET. Filip Malbasic made a trip abroad with the Serbian U21 side for their 1-0 play-off defeat to England. The TSG player started the game, before being brought off in the 60th minute.

TSG players involved in friendlies

There were also friendly U21 matches that took place, including Greece against Belgium and Austria against the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Austrians won by a convincing 5-1 scoreline, with striker Michael Gregoritsch scoring the last two goals. Koen Casteels lost his game though, 3-1 against Greece.
