Baumann: "We're approaching the home straight"

Oliver Baumann is about to start his fifth season at TSG Hoffenheim and his first season in the UEFA Champions League. In an interview with achtzehn99.de he speaks about new additions to the club, intensive training sessions and the excitement for this new season.

How is the preparation going? Obviously it's not just important for the outfield players but it's also intensive for goalkeepers. Are you happy with it all?

"We cover a lot during the sessions, not only that, but we wear long-sleeves and trousers to protect our skin from grazes and scratches. That makes it twice as hard in these extreme temperatures. But, all in all, I'm very happy with everything so far."

"We've had a lot of quality come into the squad"

Many of the newcomers are offensive players and have already managed to test you several times. How do you perceive the new players?

For sure, we've had a lot of quality come into the squad and you could notice it in the first few weeks. In terms of team structure, we have a very good squad and despite all the intensity, it's fun and makes the work enjoyable."

Is the anticipation for the start of the season slowly increasing after all the training sessions?

"Firstly we have to survive the next training camp! (Laughs). After that we're approaching the home straight of the preparation and we'll be happy to get going again. Of course, we'll also want to get off to a good start."

The Bundesliga kicks off with the first game on 24 August against Bayern Munich and will be a good test for the Champions League, which starts on 30 August. Has the thought of the Champions League already entered your head or does it still seem too far away for that?"

"It's still quite a way away surprisingly. But I think after the draw, when we find out who we'll play, and what it is about, it'll get exciting. At the moment, my head is still screwed on and the whole thing still isn't tangible. That'll change after the draw."

Is there a particular team that you would like to face?

"Absolutely not. I can't change it anyway, I'm just looking forward to it."
