TSG up the fifth after away win at Köln

TSG picked up three points at Köln after a convincing away performance on matchday 11. Dennis Geiger and Sandro Wagner (2) scored for Hoffenheim in the RheinEnergieStadion, moving Julian Nagelsmann’s side up to fifth in the Bundesliga.

Personnel and tactics

TSG started with Oliver Baumann, Kerem Demirbay, Florian Grillitsch, Sandro Wagner, Nico Schulz, Nadiem Amiri, Mark Uth, Kevin Vogt, Kevin Akpoguma, Dennis Geiger and Stefan Posch against Köln. This was four changes from the side that played against Basaksehir Istanbul (1-1) in midweek. Uth, Geiger, Akpoguma and Posch came in for the TSG.

Akpoguma and Vogt manned the centre of defence, in front of Baumann in goal, while Schulz and Posch took up the full-back positions. Grillitsch and Geiger played in the centre of the park, Amiri and Demirbay on the wings. Amiri, particularly, played very high up the pitch so the formation looked more like a 4-3-3 with Uth and Amiri on either side of Wagner. After half-time, TSG shook it up, Uth moving back into midfield, making it a 4-5-1.

Andrej Kramaric came in for Amiri in the 68th minute. Dennis Geiger was replaced by Eugen Polanski with 77 minutes gone, and the final change was made nine minutes before the final whistle when two-goal Wagner came off for Havard Nordtveit.

The moment of the match

Referee Deniz Aytekin awarded a penalty for Hoffenheim with 54 minutes gone, using VAR to come to a final decision.

The fact of the game
