"A great ending"

The players and managers spoke with the media following a 0-0 draw with FC Augsburg in the final match of the season.

Dietmar Hopp: It was clear, that today’s game would be difficult, also because there was still a lot at stake for Augsburg. I’m happy for FCA, but I'll be even happier if we manage to qualify for the Champions League through the play-offs in August. If the Dortmund game had ended in a draw, we might’ve been a bit more upset. This success is very important for the club, because it will give us, especially in the youth departments, a forward push. Their role models are playing here in the Bundesliga.

Julian Nagelsmann: Congratulations to FCA for staying up. It’s important for my home region, so I’m happy for them as well. I don’t want to say much about the game today. We were poor in the first half. We lost the ball too much, allowing many counter attacks for Augsburg. After the break, we improved. We should’ve scored a goal then. Hitting the woodwork was unfortunate, but we had more opportunities. Perhaps a goal would have made it easier for us. I’m glad that Dortmund won their game in the end, otherwise it would’ve been even more painful for us today. We are a very ambitious team and we want to quality through the play-offs. No matter which opponent we are given, we want to play two good games. We’ve had an extraordinary season, playing exciting football. I think we’ve won many new fans with the way we’ve played. I’m very proud of the team for that.

Manuel Baum: We are overjoyed of having avoided relegation. In the first half, we defended well against a very good football team. We won the ball a lot, but couldn’t finish off our counter attacks. From the 55th minute onwards, Hoffenheim started to play better. We got lucky with a few shots hitting the woodwork. We struggled with our energy towards the end, but fought hard to earn this point.

Alexander Rosen: Today we experienced a mix of emotions. I was always aware of the score in Dortmund. After the final whistle I did feel disappointment, because we had been in third place during the game. However, now I can look back at this extraordinary season filled with records. The team and the coaches have done an amazing job.

Niklas Süle: We wanted to win the game, but didn’t create clear chances as Augsburg defended deeply. I’ve gone through a lot with Hoffenheim and this season was amazing. We fought hard to earn this fourth-place finish. Now we can go on holiday and enjoy the free time before heading towards the national team.

Sandro Wagner: There is disappointment. We finished fourth, which is amazing. If someone had told us this before the season, we would’ve accepted the offer immediately. We will enjoy this. If the game in Dortmund had ended in a 3-3 draw, we might’ve been a bit upset, but there is nothing we could’ve done. We gave everything today. Augsburg defended quite deep and made it difficult for us. Overall the season went great for us. We are a great team, in all aspects.

Sebastian Rudy: I’ve enjoyed seven great years at TSG. This is a great ending. I’m happy about finishing in fourth place and I’m very thankful to Hoffenheim. We knew that the score was 3-3 in Dortmund with just a few minutes left to play. That’s why Niklas Süle went into attack, but it wasn’t meant to be. We played a fantastic season and accomplished more than we had hoped for. I wasn’t nervous today, because we had nothing to lose. Our precision while building attacks wasn’t on point today, which is why we weren’t able to make Augsburg work as much as we wanted.
