Hertha BSC match reaction

Here’s what the managers and players had to say after TSG’s 2-1 win over Hertha in the WIRSOL Rhein-Neckar-Arena.

Julian Nagelsmann: It took us ten minutes to wake up in the match. Luckily, Oliver Baumann kept us in the game. Hertha had created a few more chances than us up until half time. They defended really well and were compact, but they always had players who were ready to catch us on the counter. I was happy with the second half. Football-wise I was happy with the team and in the end, we decided the match with the set-pieces. Overall, it was our best performance since I took charge.

Pal Dardai: Congratulations to TSG. Two very well organised teams faced off against each other today. Before the break, the match went as we had planned. We controlled the play well. After taking the lead we had a set piece from which we could have made it 2-0 but instead Hoffenheim hit back. Both teams played for the win after the restart, which obviously has its risks because TSG have players who are able to take advantage of the spaces that get left. We were always in the match and could have gone home with a point. However, if you concede to goals from set-pieces you don’t deserve the point. This was a wake-up call ahead of our mid-week cup game against Dortmund. In the end, Hoffenheim deserved to win.

Fabian Schär: It was an important win. The three points are the main thing. It’s obviously great that I could help the team out by scoring. The ball from Nadiem landed on my head perfectly. In the season so far we haven’t scored that often from set-pieces but managed to net twice from them today. It has made us more courageous for the upcoming matches as we kept our cool after going behind and carried on.

Nadiem Amiri: First and foremost, the three points were important for us. The fact that we have managed to overtake a few teams in the league is a positive side effect. We always work on set-pieces in training, and it’s great that it has worked out today. We were all very happy in the changing room but we all know that we still have four difficult matches left. We have to try our best and pick up as many points as possible. Today isn’t the end, it is just one step. If we continue like this I am sure that we will stay in the Bundesliga.
