Wins for Baumgartner, Schulz & Szalai

The Bundesliga season may be over, but 12 TSG players were on international duty over Whitsun. There were defeats for Ermin Bicakcic and Andrej Kramaric, but Heidelberg neighbours Nico Schulz and Adam Szalai tasted victory in their final outing before the break, while Christoph Baumgartner helped the Austria U21s to cause an upset.

The German national team rounded off the 2018/19 international season in style, beating Estonia 8-0 in Mainz to claim their third win in as many matches in Euro 2020 qualifying. Departing Hoffenheim man Nico Schulz started the match, earning his sixth cap – all of which have come during his time at the club. The left-back was substituted after 45 minutes and will now take a well-deserved summer holiday.

Over in Budapest, his Heidelberg neighbour Adam Szalai helped Hungary to an important and hard-fought 1-0 victory over Wales. The Hungarians now sit top of Group E with nine points from four matches. As per usual, the Hoffenheim forward was handed a starting berth against Ryan Giggs' men.

Bicakcic starts for Bosnia & Herzegovina against Italy

Elsewhere, defender Ermin Bicakcic started for Bosnia & Herzegovina in a 2-1 loss to Italy. An 86th-minute goal from Marco Verrati was enough to steal a late win for the Azzurri in Turin. Vincenzo Grifo did not feature for the Italians, who top Group J with 12 points from four games. Bosnia & Herzegovina are fifth in their six-team group with only four points from four matches.

Another TSG man to taste defeat was Andrej Kramaric, who was part of the Croatia side that suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to Tunisia in Varaždin. Kramaric started the match for the World Cup finalists.

Victory over France for Baumgartner

Meanwhile, Christoph Baumgartner fared better for his country. The youngster was part of the Austria U21 side that beat France in their final friendly prior to the European Championships. The midfielder made a substitute appearance on the hour-mark.

At the tournament, which will take place between 16 and 30 June, his Austria side will face a Germany U21 team including Nadiem Amiri in the group stages. achtzehn99.de will bring you the usual regular updates.
