Adamyan nets brace as terrific TSG win in Munich

Sargis Adamyan scored two goals on his first start to ensure TSG Hoffenheim came away from the Allianz Arena with a 2-1 (0-0) win against FC Bayern Munich – their first-ever away victory over the record champions in the Bundesliga – on a crazy afternoon in Bavaria.

Personnel and tactics:

TSG Hoffenheim head coach Alfred Schreuder made one change to the starting XI that lost 3-0 to Borussia Mönchengladbach last time out, with Sargis Adamyan replacing Christoph Baumgartner as the lone frontman. Goalkeeper Oliver Baumann was protected by a back four of Stefan Posch, Kevin Akpoguma, Benjamin Hübner and Robert Skov, while Pavel Kadeřábek and Ihlas Bebou occupied the wide berths and Florian Grillitsch, Sebastian Rudy and Dennis Geiger formed the midfield trio behind Adamyan, who was making his first Bundesliga start.

Kadeřábek was forced off through injury in the 62nd minute of the match with Konstantinos Stafylidis taking his place. Bebou subsequently moved across to the right and Skov pushed up into midfield. Five minutes later, Håvard Nordtveit made his first appearance of the season in place of the injured Grillitsch. The final change came as Adamyan left the pitch to huge applause and was replaced by Ermin Bičakčić for the final minutes (81).

Moment of the match:

Sargis Adamyan crowned a wonderful individual performance by scoring his second goal in the 79th minute, controlling Robert Skov's pass before turning and firing home the winning goal.

Match highlights

4. Min.

TSG go close on the counter-attack when Adamyan is played clean through on Neuer's goal by Bebou. But Boateng manages to get a foot in at the last minute and block the shot. That was a big chance to take an early lead.

26. Min.

Bayern create their first real chances of the match: Lewandowski brilliantly sets up Gnabry, who drives into the area and shoots, but Baumann thwarts the danger and then denies Thiago’s follow-up as well.

40. Min.

Posch is suddenly presented with an opportunity to open the scoring for Hoffenheim: the defender pinches the ball off Gnabry and surges into the penalty area, but his shot from 14 metres out is too central to trouble Neuer.

54. Min.

Geiger wins the ball back in the Bayern box and squares it to Adamyan, who outmanoeuvres Boateng and fires a left-footed shot into the bottom corner.

65. Min.

TSG almost double their advantage through Posch, who brilliantly controls a free-kick in the box and immediately takes aim for the far corner. But it goes agonisingly wide of the post.

70. Min.

There’s a chance out of nothing for Bayern as the ball is chipped through to Gnabry, but his glancing header fortunately sails wide. Lewandowski heads over shortly afterwards.

73. Min.

This time the header goes in: Müller’s cross to Lewandowski is inch perfect and the Poland forward comfortably nods home. Baumann had no chance.

79. Min.

What the hell is happening? Skov wins the ball on the left and plays it low into the middle towards Adamyan, who fires perfectly into the corner. Crazy stuff!
