Schreuder: "The cup is an important competition"

Head coach Alfred Schreuder spoke at the press conference prior to the DFB Cup First Round tie away to FC Würzburger Kickers (Saturday at 18:30 CET, live ticker at achtzehn99.de) about the meeting on Saturday, the opposition and the personnel situation.

Alfred Schreuder on…

…the start of competitive fixtures: "There's a great deal of anticipation. Pre-season always goes on for a long time. Being at a new club, it's obviously nice that I had a lot of time. But after five or six weeks, it's good that things are getting underway. You look forward to it."

…the opposition: "Würzburg have done good work in recent years. They have a lot of young players and are prepared to play against us. We've analysed them and we'll see what tactical set-up they opt for."

…the DFB Cup: "In Germany, every club has a chance in the DFB Cup. Even one in the third tier. It's really nice that there are so many different clubs involved. For us, the primary objective is to reach the next round. The cup is an important competition for us."

…the personnel situation: "Leonardo Bittencourt and Sargis Adamyan are unavailable. Unfortunately, Andrej Kramaric is still out too. He's a top player for us. His knee is already doing a little better. But we don't yet know if he'll be ready for the game in Frankfurt. Konstantinos Stafylidis is returning to training today. Kevin Vogt is fit again."

The social media fan question of the week:

Last season, TSG had a goal difference of 70-52. At Ajax, you had a goal difference of 119-32. In which direction do you want to place your focus? Improving the attack or stabilising the defence?

"We want to strengthen in both directions. We'll try to score more goals and concede fewer goals at the same time. You cannot compare Ajax with Hoffenheim. It's an entirely different league and there are entirely different expectations. The Bundesliga is a lot stronger. In principle, the attack always has a link to the defence. We want to concede fewer goals and attack better."

The opposition's form:

Würzburg won their opening game of the season but lost each of their subsequent three matches and currently sit in 17th place with three points on the board after four rounds.

Head-to-head record:

This will be the first competitive meeting between the two clubs.
