McKennie: "We'll hold our own"

FC Schalke 04's Weston McKennie has recently returned to fitness following a spell on the sidelines and is now aiming to help the Royal Blues preserve their top-flight status. In an interview with achtzehn99.de, the 20-year-old spoke in the run-up to his side's home game with TSG Hoffenheim on Saturday (20:30 CET/Live Ticker at achtzehn99.de) about his health situation, the game on Easter Saturday and the coaching change in Gelsenkirchen.

Weston, you were recently sidelined with a capsule injury. How are you doing and can you play on Saturday?

"I'm doing very well given the doctors initially feared I'd suffered a season-ending injury. Following my return, our physicians and physios have done some very good work. It was hard for me but I'm very happy about the result. Whatever role our coach has earmarked me for on Saturday, I'm ready."

You've missed the past three matches. How difficult was it not being involved during that time?

"Watching from the sidelines is never nice. Even though – as I said – I was very busy, I was still going through it with the lads. Being healthy is definitely nicer."

Now you're up against TSG on Saturday. What kind of game are you expecting?

"One against a very strong team that is very creative and strong going forward. We'll hold our own, preferably like in the reverse fixture. The 1-1 draw away to TSG was one of our better performances."

Huub Stevens has been in the dugout for the past four games. What's been different since the change of coaches?

"I don't want to draw comparisons, especially because we were very successful with Domenico Tedesco too. It helps us in this situation that Huub Stevens demands a lot of us but places his trust in us too. The training sessions have certainly become longer, we're working on having more possession."

How do you rate your chances of avoiding relegation?

"Rather than quantifying it, I'll simply say this: we're aware of the seriousness of the situation and we haven't been mincing our words internally. It's our reality. If you look at the table right now, we have a certain distance between ourselves and 16th place. We certainly want to maintain that lead."
