Ginczek: "It'll be an energy-sapping game"

Forward Daniel Ginczek joined VfL Wolfsburg last summer and is hoping to help the club qualify for Europe in his debut season. In an interview with achtzehn99.de in the run-up to the Wolves' visit to Sinsheim on Sunday (15.30 CET/Live Ticker at achtzehn99.de), the 28-year-old striker spoke about his injury lay-off after the winter break, the reverse fixture and the situation heading into the final weeks of the season.

Daniel, you were sidelined with a ligament injury when the season restarted. Now you're fit again. How have you managed your first games since the lay-off and how are you doing?

"It happened more quickly than many expected. My goal from the beginning was to make my comeback sooner than planned. The fact that it then happened so quickly was great for me. I made my comeback against Borussia Dortmund having only completed a few training sessions and I made my first start against Eintracht Frankfurt in the last round of fixtures."

On Sunday, you're facing a TSG Hoffenheim side who are one of your direct rivals for the European places. What kind of game are you expecting?

"TSG counter at great speed and are very dangerous going forward. I think it'll be similar to our match against Frankfurt in the sense that there will be a lot of penalty box action. But, of course, I'm hoping this time it ends better for us."

The reverse fixture finished 2-2. You scored one goal and set up the other. What are your memories from that first meeting before Christmas?

"The first half was probably one our best performances in the entire season. Both for the team and me personally, given my goal and assist. But in the second period Hoffenheim switched things around and pushed for the equaliser. In the end, we could count ourselves fortunate that we managed to take a point. It was a very energy-sapping match and I'm expecting the same again on Sunday."

You put a good run together before the winter break and made up some ground in terms of position and points. Are you hoping for a similar run to close out the season?

"Every team needs the points. Our next opponents are TSG Hoffenheim, followed by two relegation candidates in 1. FC Nuremberg and VfB Stuttgart. We did perform very well towards the end of the first half-season. Naturally, we're hoping that things now go similarly in the final few weeks and that we're successful again. We'll give it our all to make it happen."
