Nagelsmann: "A win could invigorate us"

In his press conference before the Bundesliga match away to Borussia Dortmund (Saturday 15.30 CET), Julian Nagelsmann gave his thoughts on the opposition's cup exit, the personnel situation and the week in training.

Julian Nagelsmann on…

…the personnel situation: ''I reckon that Joelinton will be ready for Saturday. He only had a bit of stiffness in his toe. Kasim Adams and Robin Hack made their returns to training yesterday, but they won't be quite ready to play on Saturday. Kevin Vogt is also out with a pulled thigh.''

…Borussia Dortmund's cup match: ''I don't know whether or not their exit from the cup will have any impact on our game. It's a leap into the unknown. It could well be that it gives them additional strength to direct towards other things, they're now absolutely going to want to focus on winning the league.''

…the week in training: ''We honed in on exactly what it is that we have to do better. The match against Fortuna Düsseldorf actually seemed a lot worse when I was watching it live on the sideline than it did when I sat down to watch the replay. We just weren't quite able to carve out enough chances. We went through a similar phase last season. We're not at the level we aspire to, but I wouldn't say things are so bad for us right now.''

…BVB: ''Borussia Dortmund are a cut above the competition in all statistical areas. They fully deserve their place at the top of the Bundesliga. In addition to the unbelievably strong team and the really good coach, we also have to contend with a very noisy crowd. They're doing a great job. We need an absolutely outstanding performance if we want to win in Dortmund. A win could really invigorate us for the rest of the season.''

The social media question of the week:

How do you structure training in the build-up to a match?  ''The level of physical exertion is planned across several weeks. It can be harder one week, easier another, it just depends on what the demands of the schedule are each week. Our mental preparation also varies according to the situation.''

The opposition's form:

After 20 matchdays, Borussia Dortmund are top of the table and have a seven-point advantage over the second-placed team. In their cup encounter with Werder Bremen on Tuesday, they were knocked out after losing 7-5 on penalties.

The previous encounters:

The overall head-to-head record in the Bundesliga is an unfavourable one for Hoffenheim: TSG have lost eight matches, drawn eight and won five. Nonetheless, TSG have enjoyed some notable successes against BVB over the years: in May 2013, the club's only away win in Dortmund to date was enough to prevent relegation, while on Matchday 34 last season, Julian Nagelsmann's side managed to secure qualification for the Champions League thanks to a 3-1 win.
