"We wanted to do better"

Here are the reactions from the TSG players and both coaches after the 2-1 loss to RB Leipzig.

Kevin Akpoguma: "I'm very disappointed. We wanted to do better after the hard-fought victory against Hannover. We wanted to make a good start at home to the upcoming 'English week', which will be very intense on Tuesday. It wasn't the best result that we've had against Leipzig. We're being hampered again by the injuries we have to contend with, unfortunately that's how it is. We need to make sure we can compensate. We'll grin and bear it until the international break. The players who haven't yet been at the forefront need to take this chance and enjoy it."

Stefan Posch: "I think that was a controversial decision before they went 1-0 up. He ran into me and then trod on my thigh. You could make the argument it was a foul, but the whistle didn't sound and I have to accept that. In the first half in particular, we didn't play the kind of football we're capable of and we adapted to Leipzig. We can't allow that to happen to us. We need to do better. We'll analyse the match later today and from tomorrow onwards our focus will be on Manchester City."

Adam Szalai: "Our first half was not acceptable. We didn't deliver the performance level we have in recent matches. But if we'd converted our chances in the first period, we would've taken the lead and then perhaps the match would've turned out differently. But our attitude and our performance were simply not acceptable."

Oliver Baumann: "The first half was very sluggish from both teams. We should've exploited that. We didn't push up optimally and weren't aggressive or agile. Then we had a bit of luck that we didn't concede the first goal in the first period. The Champions League wasn't already on our minds. We simply didn't get into the game, overall we were just not quite lively enough. The defensive line-up we had at the back doesn't have much experience together, but it wasn't down to them. I'm still too annoyed by this defeat to be able to think about our match on Tuesday yet. The atmosphere against Manchester City will be top-class again. It's obviously amazing to be playing against the English champions."

Julian Nagelsmann: "We lost two central defenders over night, so we had a major reshuffle and there were six players unavailable in total. Akpoguma wasn't actually supposed to play. We should've taken the lead in the first half. And that would've been deserved. In the passage of play before their opener we could've scored a goal but we didn't make the most of our numerical superiority. For their goal it could've been a foul for that tackle between Werner and Posch. Their second was also was not a well-worked goal. Then it got difficult. The penalty came too late. We had the clearer chances, a draw would've been deserved. And if we'd taken the lead in the opening half, I'm relatively sure that we would've won."

Ralf Rangnick (RB Leipzig coach): "It was the intense and fast-paced game we expected with lots of chances at both ends. In the first half Hoffenheim had more of the chances. I think the victory was deserved, based on the second half. We then repeatedly launched good counter-attacks. What was decisive was that we made use of our chances."
