Kevin Vogt pens new deal

The captain is set to remain on board. Kevin Vogt has prematurely extended his contract with Bundesliga club TSG Hoffenheim by a further two years until 30 June 2022. The 26-year-old defender arrived in Kraichgau from Cologne in the summer of 2016 and immediately established himself as a first-team regular. Vogt, who was recently appointed as club captain ahead of the new season, becomes the fourth key player − after Kerem Demirbay, Pavel Kadeřábek and Andrej Kramarić − to pledge his long-term future to the club in the past few weeks.

"Long-term squad planning predominantly consists of work relating to the players you already have in place rather than supposedly spectacular new signings," said TSG Sporting Director Alexander Rosen, who explained that the advantage in the former scenario is the fact "the players no longer need to be convinced of the benefits of the club. They're already aware of them and, as in the case of Kevin Vogt, they've even played their own part in ensuring that the foundations for a successful future are laid," said Rosen in praise of the performances of the Witten native, who joined Hoffenheim from Cologne in 2016 and has since "not only become one of the central figures at TSG, but has shown that he's of key value to us thanks to his outstanding build-up play and his tempo both in attack and defence."

They are qualities that have attracted the attentions of some top clubs. "Of course, that was nice to hear," admits Vogt. "But in the end both the possibilities for personal development and the ambitions of the club proved decisive for me," added the defender, who believes he and the club "still have a lot to accomplish together. Moreover, I'm happy and full of pride to bear responsibility for a team that brings joy to so many people due to the way it plays." Wearing the captain's armband is "an honour but also a responsibility". By penning a new contract, Vogt has set an example and put to bed any ongoing speculation.

Kevin Vogt has made 74 appearances for TSG Hoffenheim to date, featuring in a total of 62 Bundesliga matches. He has also played five times in the Europa League, twice in the Champions League play-offs against Liverpool and five times in the DFB Cup. Having served as vice-captain last season, he was appointed as the on-pitch commander-in-chief for the new season during the summer break.
