Nico Schulz: "Adam made almost the perfect dinner"

Against VfL Wolfsburg, he smashed the ball home from close range with his preferred left boot for his first Bundesliga goal for TSG on Saturday. We spoke to the weekend’s goalscorer about the meaning of his goal, Adam Szalai’s cooking skills and his meeting with former teammates in Mönchengladbach this coming Saturday.

Nico, you’ve now got yourself on the scoresheet in TSG colours. How did that feel to help the team get three points?

Nico Schulz: “It was an unbelievable feeling. The win meant we’re in a better position. I’m happy to be able to have contributed to the win in Wolfsburg.”

After the final whistle, Adam Szalai and Ermin Bicakcic came over to congratulate you. You get on very well off the pitch too…

Schulz: “We spend a lot of time with one another and do a lot together, that’s true and it’s the same with Adam. We got to know each other three years ago on holiday and stayed in touch since. When I signed for Hoffenheim, we went for a meal the evening beforehand. Now he’s my neighbour in Heidelberg. It’s important to have close friendships within a team. When you have fun together, it improves the mood on and off the pitch. We fight for one another. It means when you win, you celebrate with not just your colleagues but your friends and that makes it even sweeter.”

Last week, you went round to Adam’s who had cooked for you – how are his culinary skills?

Schulz: "It was almost the perfect dinner. It’s quite rare that one of us whips something up in the kitchen. We normally go out to eat but that can get repetitive after a while. Therefore, Adam invited us over for dinner. He made a pasta bake. I was extremely surprised as it was actually very, very tasty! We’ll do it again soon."

On Saturday, you face former friends as we head to Mönchengladbach. In the reverse fixture, TSG were defeated 3-1 at home. How will the team go about bettering their result this time around?

Schulz: “We shouldn’t focus on that game too much but instead look to our last two performances and try and build on them on Saturday.”

It hasn’t been going as planned for Dieter Hecking’s side of late. Borussia are missing lots of players through injury. How do you rate the Foals and do you think we can get a result?

Schulz: "I know the lads at Borussia very well. I know that, despite their injuries, they have a lot of quality in their squad. It won’t be easy. In their own stadium backed by their fans, they’re a very good side. However, we want to play our own game and win this Saturday.”
