Kevin Akpoguma extends contract to 2021

Kevin Akpoguma has extended his contract at TSG Hoffenheim to 30th June 2021. The 22-year-old defender has been at TSG since 2013 and returned to the club for this season’s campaign after two years on loan at Fortuna Düsseldorf.

“TSG is the perfect club for me to develop further and to establish myself as a Bundesliga player”, said Akpoguma. “I find myself here at a place where they give young players a chance to improve and grow.” Alexander Rosen, director of football at TSG, is delighted about the contract extension: “It’s a clear sign that we want to continue into the future with young, coveted players who will continue to develop.” In Akpoguma, TSG are continuing to tie down young players on a long-term basis in order to ensure TSG have an “ambitious squad that will serve them for many years to come”.

An accident in April 2017 made Kevin Akpoguma a nationwide name. During a second division clash against FC St Pauli while playing for Fortuna Düsseldorf, Kevin suffered a serious spinal injury. “Initially, it didn’t look good. The doctors didn’t know whether the vertebra would grow back as it was completely broke”, said Akpoguma who completed his rehabilitation at TSG and was back out on the training pitch 86 days later. “Normally, it takes three to four months but, for me, my back had recovered after seven weeks. It was a minor miracle. I’d like to thanks TSG and all the staff who helped me from the bottom of heart – they made my early recovery possible.”

Akpoguma did not only reach his former levels after his recovery – but surpassed them. On 22nd October, Kevin celebrated his Bundesliga debut. Since then, he’s made seven further Bundesliga appearances and one DFB-Pokal clash. Akpoguma has played for the Germany national team at every level from U16 to U21 level and reflects on a big year in his development. “There was a genuine possibility that I’d never play football ever again. I’ve learnt to treasure my career as a footballer even more. I’m very happy with how everything’s going and thankful for everything I have.”
