TSG suffer defeat to HSV

On Matchday 13, TSG lost 3-0 away to HSV. Kevin Akpoguma scored an unfortunate own goal early on, before Filip Kostic aand Gideon Jung completed the scoring for the hosts after the break.

Line up and tactics

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann put out this starting XI to face Hamburg: Oliver Baumann, Kerem Demirbay, Florian Grillitsch, Sandro Wagner, Nico Schulz, Steven Zuber, Mark Uth, Kevin Vogt, Kevin Akpoguma, Serge Gnabry and Stefan Posch. This meant Nagelsmann had made four changes from Thursday’s Europa League game in Braga, with Akpoguma, Wagner, Uth and Gnabry coming into the starting XI.

On the field, TSG were set up with Baumann in goal, and Vogt, Akpoguma and Posch forming the back three in front of him. Schulz and Zuber were occupied the wings, and Grillitsch played as a holding midfielder. Ahead of him, Demirbay and Gnabry played in central midfield, while Mark Uth and Sandro Wagner formed a partnership up front.

In the 57th minute, Nagelsmann made his first change, with Nadiem Amiri coming on for Gnabry as a straight swap. Eight minutes later, the second and third changes were made, as Adam Szalai and Andrej Kramaric replaced Demirbay and Zuber.  From then on, TSG played in a 4-3-3 or even a 4-2-4 formation as they threw everything at HSV.

Moment of the game:

Sandro Wagner – a bit older, a bit more experienced, a leader. After Akpoguma’s own goal, the striker went straight over to reassure him and keep his head up.

Number of the game: 15

TSG had not failed to score in their last 15 Bundesliga games, and had scored 28 goals over that period. In Hamburg, this run came to an end.
