Reaction to #TSGBMG: “Things became far too hectic”

Players and coaches give their thoughts on Hoffenheim’s 3-1 loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Bundesliga match day 10.

Julian Nagelsmann:

Congratulations to Gladbach, they deserved to win. We started the game quite well, and created a lot of chances down the wings – especially on the left. The final ball was lacking too often though. We were okay in the first half, but after that, the game became really open. Gladbach had some great chances which we allowed them to have too cheaply. We were lucky that we weren’t playing from behind from an earlier stage. However, we managed to put ourselves into the lead. We played well in the opening stages of the second half, and we seemed in control. After that though things became far too hectic. We tried to get a second goal too carelessly and lost the ball far too cheaply on multiple occasions. Gladbach made use of those opportunities very well. They were deserved winners by the end.

Dieter Hecking:

It was another really entertaining game today. Both teams tried to push forward as much as possible and created chances. We had some golden chances in the first half, but we just couldn’t convert. As a result, we found ourselves trailing by a goal, and it could well have been two. We came together at half time and said and said “Come on, there’s still something in this for us.” Hioffenheim are a tough team to break down, so the boys did extremely well to bring it back. You could tell that we really wanted the win. I’m very satisfied with our performance today.

Nico Schulz:

We played against a good team today. We played poorly in the second half and gave the ball away too much. When you give Gladbach chances like that, they will punish you. We have to play better if we want to win. It all comes down to the little things. If we did a few things better today, we could have won. We want to always be attacking and trying to score goals, but we can’t be careless. Our focus is now on the game in Istanbul, because the Europa League means a lot to us. We want to come back with all three points.

Oliver Baumann:

It was an evenly balanced game. Both teams wanted to play football, and both teams are really good. Towards the end of the game we found it really hard to create anything, and we were on the back foot a lot. Grifo’s work in the lead up to the second goal was brilliant, but we have to defend better. It’s a shame. It was an open game, and we didn’t play badly. I think we have a very deep squad, and you can still see that even when things don’t go our way. The young guys in particular are great and aren’t afraid to take risks – Gladbach were just better today. It’s annoying, because we let a few points go begging but that happens. We have to do better in the future.

Kerem Demirbay:

We didn’t create enough chances today and we tried to shoot too early a lot of the time I thought. We didn’t close down space quick enough either, and then the game got out of reach. Gladbach had the fresher legs and deserved to win by the end.
