#TSGSVW Reaction: "Can only complement the team"

Julian Nagelsmann and his players give their thoughts on an opening-day victory.

Julian Nagelsmann: We were extremely good in the opening 20 minutes today, winning the ball back quickly and enjoying some unbelievable spells of pressure. We should be making it 1-0 with Kerem Demirbay’s chance. That would not only have put us in a good position to win the game, but it would have changed the way the opposition played. We didn’t take this opportunity, then approaching the half-hour mark we were poor. Then another good ten minutes followed, with strong pressing. I had the feeling we would score then. In the last few minutes of the first half, Bremen were stronger again. After the break our pressure was even more intense, and Bremen no longer had their counterattacking outlet. The goal was lucky, but the win was not lucky. It’s extremely difficult when the opposition sits so deep. There are very few teams in Europe who can create numerous chances in these situations. I can only complement the team for their efforts until the very end. They were very disciplined and desperately wanted to win. And all that with the game against Liverpool coming up on Wednesday. I am very pleased.

Alexander Nouri: We found it very difficult in the first half. It got better. We attacked well in parts as well. After the break we lacked an attacking outlet. We defended well but in the end we were not-undeservedly beaten. With a bit of luck, we might have left with a point. The goal falling how it did was unlucky.

Oliver Baumann: Bremen sat very deep, which made it difficult to find the right spaces. At the back we were very good today. We defended efficiently. We’re very pleased to have our first three points in the bag after one game. I kept getting annoyed that we weren’t scoring sooner. I was always trying to push the lads. Teams sitting so deep is a new experience for us.

Kevin Vogt: It was a difficult game, as we expected. We were prepared for Werder defending deep and trying to hit us on the counter. Andrej Kramaric was the breakthrough, I’m pleased for him. Bottom line, we deserved the win. Of course we could still feel the strain from the Liverpool game, but we had enough time to regenerate. You could see that on the pitch today. We were calm on the ball. We were very disciplined over the 90 minutes. Didn’t make life difficult for ourselves. We had chances to score earlier, but we’ll take the 1-0 win.

Serge Gnabry: A tough game with a deep Bremen back line – they were poised and ready for counterattacks. That didn’t make things easy. We had chances and if we’d taken them earlier the game would obviously have been easier. Andrej’s goal obviously did us a lot of good.

Kerem Demirbay: We were the better team over the 90 minutes and we made our own luck. Of course, with regard to converting chances there is room for improvement. That would have made life much easier for us. Lots of teams will set out to play like Werder did today and it will make it difficult for us to create chances. I’m now looking forward to Liverpool. We could achieve something extraordinary there. We could turn it around. We will give everything to do that.

Alexander Rosen: I am very pleased. That was a well-deserved victory. We saw today what we will see in many games to come. Bremen had little interest in keeping the ball and just wanted to counterattack. We were very strong, especially after the break. We gave them nothing. The goal was lucky, but deserved. Obviously it’s fantastic to be able to bring on Andrej and Serge. Dennis Geiger had an incredible debut today. He’s been waiting for this moment for a long time, and he demonstrated his talent on the pitch today.
