SC Freiburg match reaction

The managers and players give their thoughts on the 2-1 win against SC Freiburg at home.

Julian Nagelsmann: I was impressed at how well SC Freiburg played today. The first half consisted of various phases: it started off fairly even, then we were the better side for a while but then SC Freiburg dominated in the later stages. After the break we had two good chances and we really should have scored from them. We have to make the game ours earlier. Freiburg then brought on some attacking players and that changed the change. We didn’t defend well and as a consequence, we let in the equaliser. Thankfully we scored the winner through the penalty. We deserved to win as we had more chances.

Christian Streich: Well done to Julian Nagelsmann and TSG. We wanted to play a more attacking game because Hoffenheim move the ball around a lot in midfield with Vogt. It was brave, but it worked. We gave away the ball too often in the first 25 minutes which led to TSG’s chances. We made a defensive error which led to their first goal. Sometimes that happens. But we took responsibility as a team. Both teams made tactical changes after the break. But in the end we lost the match and it hurts a little.

Sebastian Rudy: We put pressure on Freiburg so that they would make a mistake and then we made the most of it. What was lacking today was the second goal. We had three or four good chances to make the game ours. Then we could have played more calmly for the rest of the match. Overall we gave a good performance and we deserved to get the win. I was brought down from behind to win us the penalty. In my opinion it was the correct decision.

Lukas Rupp: I don’t know if it was really a penalty. Therefore I think we were a bit lucky to get the win. But we also worked hard for it, we had more chances and possession. We want to continue this form and win as many matches as possible.

Sandro Wagner: I’ve scored three goals in six matches. If I can keep this up, it should be a great season and I’ll be happy. But it’s more important that we’re playing well as a team. I’m excited for what’s to come. We are going from one match to the next. We are still unbeaten but we have difficult matches coming up against Leverkusen and Hertha Berlin. If we are still unbeaten after those, then we can be really happy. There is still a lot of room for improvement.
