Sven Schipplock: “A tough game awaits”

Sven Schipplock experienced highs and lows in his four years at TSG, before securing a move to Hamburg a year ago. The centre-forward now plies his trade with SV Darmstadt, TSG’s next opponents. We caught up with Schipplock about his new club and the clash against TSG.

Hello Sven, after just one year at Hamburg you decided to move to Darmstadt. What appealed to you about your new club?

Sven Schipplock: Darmstadt had been keeping tabs on me for a while and were following my situation. It was then quite fortunate that just before the end of the transfer window, they were looking to add another striker. We saw eye to eye right from the word go. My style of play works well here and obviously they offered the opportunity for me to play more regular football.

How have you found the first few weeks?

Schipplock: It’s gone pretty quickly. I feel very comfortable in the team and settled in easily. I also found a place to live quite quickly. I am living in between Frankfurt and Darmstadt and have already moved everything in. Overall, I feel great here and I’m looking forward to what is ahead.

Your new location also means that a trip to Hoffenheim isn’t too far!

Schipplock: I had a day off recently and actually went to the training ground to catch up with my former team mates and the physio staff. I also  recently went for dinner with a few of the boys. I know most of them pretty well.

Hoffenheim travel to Darmstadt on Tuesday. Is it always a special game for you?

Schipplock: Of course, it is still a special game for me. I spent four years there and experienced a lot. Although  many new faces have joined the club since I left, I still know most of the people there. It’s not just the players I still know, but the staff and also the head coach Julian Nagelsmann. I’m looking forward to the game.

How would you assess TSG at the moment and what do you expect from the game?

Schipplock: It’s a difficult one to call. I saw the Mainz game, which was a fantastic game for the neutral! But I think that even after three weeks, teams are still finding their feet, so it is a hard one to assess so early. Hoffenheim have a lot of quality going forward and have a lot of depth in their squad. It will be a tough game for us, but we will do everything we can to get the three points.
