Bitter defeat for Ochs and Gimber in EUROs opener

The Germany U19s national team have lost their opening match of the U19s European Championship 1-0 against Italy in Stuttgart. Despite being clearly superior in front of a record-breaking youth international crowd of 55,000, Guido Streichsbier’s side came away from the game empty-handed. TSG talent Philipp Ochs and Benedikt Gimber, who is out on loan at SV Sandhausen, both played 90 minutes.

Ochs, Gimber and the rest of the DFB side were left speechless after the final whistle at the Stuttgarter Arena. They simply could not believe what had taken place during the 90 minutes of play. The Germany youngsters had attack after attack, but just could not manage to grab a goal.

Captain Gimber spoke to Eurosport after the match: “It is really tough to take because we totally dominated Italy, but have been left with nothing to show for it. Our hopes for the semi-final are still there.” On Thursday, the Germany U19s face Portugal in their second group game in Großaspach.
