EURO 2016: Schär and Switzerland eliminated

Switzerland and TSG defender Fabian Schär faced elimination in the round of 16 at the European Championships in France, losing to Poland in a penalty shootout.

Unsurprisingly, Schär featured in the starting line-up for the fourth time in as many games this tournament, having made the tournament XI of the group stages. The round of 16 tie with Poland was an open contest for most of the match. Switzerland had slightly more to the game but Jakub Blaszczykowski was on target for Poland after 35 minutes giving them a 1-0 lead at half-time.

Switzerland found their rhythm in the second half and created several opportunities to draw level but only found the back of the net in the 82nd minute, when Xherdan Shaqiri unleashed an incredible bicycle kick to draw the Swiss level. Neither side managed to score in extra time, which meant a penalty shootout was required. Gladbach's Granit Xhaka was the only player to miss his spot-kick and Poland prevailed, winning the shootout 6-5. They now face the winner of Croatia vs. Poland in the quarterfinals.
