Farewells, a milestone and defeat to Schalke

The 2015/16 season with defeat for TSG on Saturday. Schalke 04 were 4-1 winners at the WIRSOL Rhein-Neckar-Arena, with Mark Uth on the scoreline for the hosts. The result was secondary though after Hoffenheim secured their top-flight status last week, as the club said goodbye to four players while another celebrated a milestone.

Line-up and tactics:

The final game of the season was also a send-off for Jens Grahl, Tobias Strobl, Kevin Kuranyi and Kai Herdling. Two of them also made the starting line-up for the meeting with Schalke 04, with Grahl in goal and Strobl returning from suspension to make up a back three alongside Fabian Schär and Ermin Bicakcic. The Swiss was also back in the team, replacing the injured Niklas Süle. Sebastian Rudy and another new addition Pirmin Schwegler sat in front of the defence, with Pavel Kaderabek and Tarik Elyounoussi on the flanks – it was also the Norwegian’s first appearance for several weeks. The front three was once again Kevin Volland, Mark Uth and Andrej Kramaric.

The hour mark saw Kevin Kuranyi come on for his final minutes in TSG colours, with Schwegler making way. Strobl then also received a final standing ovation, being replaced by Eugen Polanski in the 68th minute. Nadiem Amiri also came on for Volland for the final quarter of an hour.

Moment of the match:

This time it came before the game. Four players are leaving TSG this summer, whether to move on to pastures new or to end their playing careers, and were bid farewell by chief executives Dr. Peter Görlich and Frank Briel, president Peter Hofmann and director of football Alexander Rosen. Jens Grahl, Kai Herdling, Tobias Strobl and Kevin Kuranyi were all given a fitting send-off. There were tears, emotions and lots of applause from the stands.

Number of the match: 100

Eugen Polanski has racked up a decent amount of game time in the Bundesliga. The match against Schalke was already the midfielder’s 100th in TSG colours. A nice milestone for the Pole to end the season on.
