Draw at Grossaspach in first winter friendly

TSG played their first friendly match on day three of their winter training. Huub Stevens’ side drew 1-1 at third-division side SG Sonnenhof Großaspach. Hontcheu Ngankam put the hosts ahead in the 86th minute before Pirmin Schwelger equalised in the dying seconds.

Personnel and line-up:

Huub Stevens opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation in the first friendly match of the winter break. Five training sessions within 48 hours had changed nothing. In front of goalkeeper Oliver Baumann was the back line of Jin-Su Kim, Niklas Süle, Fabian Schär and Pavel Kaderabek. The two holding midfielders were Sebastian Rudy and Tobias Strobl. The attacking three attacking midfielders consisted of Tarik Elyounoussi, Kevin Volland and Jonathan Schmid, with Eduardo Vargas playing as the lone striker.

The management decided to change the team completely for the second half, switching to 4-4-2. Kevin Kurányi and Joelinton led the line, with Mark Uth, Pirmin Schwegler, Eugen Polanski and Philipp Ochs forming the midfield. The back four consisted of Jeremy Toljan, Ermin Bicakcic, Kai Herdling and Nicolai Rapp. Alexander Stolz was in goal.

The coach’s view

Huub Stevens: “The result today is not that important. What is important is that everyone is fit, was able to play and find some rhythm. I was generally pleased with the first half, but in the second half many players did not play in their natural positions, which was noticeable.”
