TSG knocked out of cup by 1860 München

TSG lost their first competitive fixture of the season 2-0 against 1860 München in the DFB Cup. Daylon Claasen, shortly after the break, and Fejsal Mulic, in injury time, scored the two goals for the hosts. After back-to-back appearances in the quarterfinals, TSG will have to settle for an early exit this season.

Tactics and line up:

Markus Gisdol sent his team out onto the pitch in Munich in the familiar 4-2-3-1 formation. Ex-1860 captain Kevin Volland led the attack as a lone striker. Behind him was the offensive trio of Sebastian Rudy, Tarik Elyounoussi and Jonathan Schmid. Tobias Strobl and captain Pirmin Schwegler occupied the two defensive midfield positions in front of a back four of Pavel Kaderabek, Fabian Schär, Niklas Süle and Jeremy Toljan on his 21st birthday. Of course, in goal was Oliver Baumann.

After the break, Markus Gisdol switched to a more attacking formation, but neither the first appearance for Kevin Kurányi, nor the introduction of Adam Szalai as a second striker could influence a successful outcome.

Match highlights:

9th minute: First real chance of the game. Rudy cuts in from the right and delivers a great ball round the back of the 1860 defence, where Elyounoussi is waiting to strike. Unfortunately his strike from just inside the box was blocked.

19th minute: Phew, that was close! Marius Wolf breaks into the TSG box and shoots from close range. Fortunately for Hoffenheim the shot took a slight deflection and trickled just wide of the post!

45th minute: The first real chance for TSG: Elyounoussi wins the ball back in midfield and plays a ball through to Schmid in the box, whose right-footed shot on goal is kept out by Ortega in the 1860 goal.

51st minute: Goal for 1860. TSG lose the ball in their own half and Wolf picks out Claasen who is free in the box to score from close range. Baumann had no chance.

58th minute: It goes from bad to worse. Fabian Schär falls awkwardly on his back after a foul from Okotie, as both players challenged for an aerial ball. After treatment from the physio, he is eventually helped off the pitch with what looks like a nasty injury. Ermin Bicakcic replaces him.

92nd minute: Fejsal Mulic wraps up the win for the Lions. The striker finished off a counter attack with a simple tap in past Oliver Baumann to make it 2-0.

Moment of the match:

Before the match, Niklas Süle delighted the fans as he returned to the pitch for his first competitive match since his ligament injury in December. A great moment for the defender after almost eight months.
