TSG suffer DFB Cup
heartbreak against Dortmund

It was an admirable performance from TSG as their run in the DFB Cup came to an end in the quarterfinals. They came from behind to take a 2-1 lead and put in a fantastic team display, but were ultimately beaten 3-2 after extra time courtesy of Sebastian Kehl's stunning half volley.

Line-up and formation:

Following the 4-1 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach, Markus Gisdol opted for a 4-3-2-1 formation and made a host of personnel changes for the DFB Cup quarterfinal against Borussia Dortmund. David Abraham missed out through injury and Jin-Su Kim dropped to the bench, meaning Ermin Bicakcic, who was suspended at the weekend, and Jeremy Toljan came into the back four alongside captain Andreas Beck and Tobias Strobl. Despite doubts about their availability earlier in the week, Eugen Polanski and Pirmin Schwegler started in holding midfield with Sebastian Rudy. Sven Schipplock spearheaded the attack once again with the ever-present Roberto Firmino and Kevin Volland playing just behind him.

Highlights:

9th minute: It's the hosts who have the first real chance of the game. Mkhitaryan picks the ball up, drives forward and tries his luck from just outside the area. His shot swerves in the air but Baumann is equal to it and holds on comfortably.

19th minute: GOAL for Dortmund. Subotic meets Blaszczykowski's corner and his right-footed shot cannons in off the far post.

21st minute: GOOOAAALLL for Hoffenheim! How about that for an immediate response! Schwegler's corner picks out Volland in acres of space and the forward volleys the ball into the far corner of the net.

28th minute: GOOOAAALLL number two for TSG! What a turnaround! Subotic has gone from hero to zero in the space of ten minutes. He miscontrols the ball, Firmino pounces, charges in on goal, keeps his cool and finishes with aplomb, chipping the ball over Mitchell Langerak.

50th minute: Neat build-up play between Kagawa and Gündogan but the latter's effort lacks power and direction and it's a routine save for Baumann.

57th minute: Equaliser for Dortmund. It's been coming as TSG have been under real pressure since the restart. Durm whips the ball in from the right, Aubameyang gets in front of Strobl and heads home to bring the teams level. What a cup tie!

61st minute: Aubameyang breaks into the box and shoots with the outside of his right boot. However, TSG's number 1 pulls off a smart save at his near post to turn the ball behind for a corner.

78th minute: Superb reaction stop from Baumann to keep out Subotic's point-blank header and prevent Dortmund from taking the lead.

84th minute: Polanski with a fantastic chance to restore TSG's lead. Volland recovers possession and quickly turns defence into attack. A sweeping move down the right sees Firmino square the ball to Polanski but the midfielder's powerful drive is pushed to safety by Langerak.

85th minute: Beck turns the defender and slips the ball through to Firmino, who had timed his run to perfection, but he lacks composure and his effort is wild and off target.

107th minute: GOAL for Dortmund. Has Sebastian Kehl just broken Hoffenheim hearts? He connects sweetly with the dropping ball from around 25 yards and his left-footed half volley creeps just inside the post. A wonder goal.

111th minute: Cracking save from Baumann to keep TSG's slim glimmer of hope of getting something from this match alive. Gündogan crosses for Kagawa and Baumann does brilliantly to block his header from close range. The ball falls for Kampl six yards out but he somehow scoops his effort over the bar.

121st minute: So close to the equaliser! Amiri plays the ball in from the right, Beck has a free header but he's unable to keep it down.

Moment of the match:

In the 33rd minute, Firmino tricked and turned his way past not one, not two, but four Dortmund players before releasing Andreas Beck. He was at it again turning players inside out by the corner flag moments later. What fantastic skills!

Number of the match: 0

TSG still haven't managed to reach the elusive DFB Cup semi-finals at the seventh attempt. It's an especially bitter defeat in Dortmund as the team put in a fantastic performance and deserved to make it through to the next round for the first time in the club's history.
