Mainz match reaction

We caught up with Markus Gisdol, Martin Schmidt and a few of the players after the 2-0 win against Mainz 05.

Markus Gisdol:Games against Mainz in the past have often gone against us. That's why I was relieved when the referee blew the final whistle. You could see that Mainz brought momentum into the game. They were the better side before half time but we defended well. After the break, we went with three in midfield in order to try and hit them on the break whenever we won the ball. Oliver Baumann kept us in it just after half time. It was a different game after we went 1-0 up and we went in search of a second goal, which we succeeded in scoring.

Martin Schmidt:We began the game with courage but we had trouble getting to the second ball. Nevertheless, we created three or four good chances and I think we ought to have taken the lead. We wanted to be courageous after half time too. Clemens had a good chance just after the restart but Baumann kept him out. Hoffenheim then sprung a good counter and we were behind. It obviously became harder after that. We put in a good performance but we also know what we need to work on.

Kevin Volland:We didn't start the game well and we were quite lucky in the first half. We were happy not to be behind at the break, but the second half was a lot more open. We got stuck in and came out on top. Now we have to look ahead to Tuesday's game in the cup.

Eugen Polanski:We made it hard for ourselves to get into the game. Mainz didn't make it easy for us in the second half either. But we fought hard and can now enjoy the win. The cross from Andi for my goal was perfect. I didn't have to do anything but head the ball home. I think that was my first headed goal.

Tobias Strobl:Neither myself or the team played well in the first half. We wanted to play our game but we couldn't do that. We heard the fans whistling and we took that on board and wanted to do better, and we did. We were much better after half time and we got the bit of luck that we needed.
