Andreas Beck: “We want to and will play better”

Andreas Beck. Captain. Full back. In an interview with achtzehn99.de, the 27-year-old spoke about the upcoming Bundesliga game against VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday, 13th September in the WIRSOL Rhein-Neckar-Arena (15:00 CEST kick-off), and also takes a look back at a recent meeting.

Hello Andreas. Some players are coming back from international duty this week. Does this change the preparations for the Wolfsburg game?

Beck: This isn't an unusual situation for us. Players are often away and then you don't have the whole squad available. But obviously it's better when we're all together. However, I think that those that were on international duty put in good performances. As far as I know, everyone that is already back is healthy, which is extremely important. It's definitely good to be able to have the whole squad available against Wolfsburg. VfL probably have more international players than us and therefore we can use the break to our advantage.

An international break after only two league games. Do you mind or is it a welcome break after the extremely stressful build-up?

Beck: It didn't come as a surprise. You already have an idea of where you are after two games, the new players have been integrated, but nevertheless, you can use the break in order to tweak one or two things. We know that we can play better than we did against Augsburg and Bremen and we will play better. In the next few weeks we host opponents in games that will require us to perform better.

There were two home games against VfL last season. Which of the two do you prefer to remember?

Beck: Obviously the 6-2 win. But both games were very intense, emotional and were full of goals. Wolfsburg have very high individual quality. We'll create a plan in order to beat them again. We play to win. The 6-2 win was too long ago for us to take any of that onto the pitch and obviously it'll be hard to produce a performance like that again.

The Wolves haven't had much zip about them so far this season. However, it will be a tough task on Saturday…

Beck: Absolutely. Wolfsburg have a very strong team. They'll come here to take something from the game. We know that it'll be a very tough match but we also know that we can beat VfL. We showed that last season. On the day, we'll come out with the right intensity and desire.
