Bosnia out of World Cup – Salihovic makes his debut in 1-0 loss to Nigeria

Bosnia-Herzegovina's hopes of reaching the last 16 of the 2014 World Cup are over. Sejad Salihovic and future Hoffenheim player Ermin Bicakcic's side lost 1-0 to Nigeria on Saturday night. It was Bosnia's second defeat in their second group game, leaving them bottom of Group F with no points and no chance of catching up with second-placed Nigeria.

Hoffenheim's Sejad Salihovic started on the bench for Bosnia-Herzegovina, together with former teammate Vedad Ibisevic. Future TSG man Ermin Bicakcic, who will join from Eintracht Braunschweig on July 1st, was in the starting XI though. However, he was unable to stop Nigeria taking a 1-0 lead via Stoke City forward Peter Odemwingie. There was controversy prior to that moment though, as Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko thought he had put Bosnia into the lead, but his strike was incorrectly ruled out for offside.

Salihovic joined the action in the second half to make his World Cup debut after missing out on the first game against Argentina due to a niggling injury. Neither he nor fellow substitute Ibisevic were able to break down the Nigerian defence though and the final score of 1-0 was enough to ensure Bosnia are unable to reach the last 16. Argentina have already confirmed their place in the knockout stages, with the other spot in Group F set to go to either Nigeria or Iran, the latter of which will face Bosnia on Wednesday.
