2-2 draw with Portugal: USA and Fabian Johnson concede late equaliser

Fabian Johnson and his USA teammates have narrowly missed out on early qualification from Group G after Silvestre Varela's injury-time header provided the dramatic conclusion to a game which the USA deserved to win.

Following his impressive performance in the opener against Ghana, soon-to-be Borussia Mönchengladbach man Fabian Johnson started at right back in a USA team that featured captain Clint Dempsey, who played despite breaking his nose in the previous game.

Portugal took an early lead in the fourth minute when Nani converted Miguel Veloso's cross at the far post, but the Iberian side let up for the rest of the first half, with USA getting in a number of shots from distance, before both Nani and Eder came close on the stroke of half time. 10 minutes into the first half Johnson set up Bradley for a shot which beat the keeper, but was cleared off the line. In the 64th minute, the USA finally found the net when Jermaine Jones curled a shot in from outside the box. With nine minutes to go, Dempsey bundled the ball into the net with his stomach to put the USMNT ahead. The “Stars and Stripes” supporters were already celebrating their passage through the knockout stages when Silvestre Varela struck in the 95th minute to keep Portugal's slim hopes of reaching the last 16 alive.
