Koen Casteels: “It will be an attacking game”

Since Heurelho Gomes' injury in the game against Fortuna Düsseldorf on matchday 28 last season, Koen Casteels has been the undisputed number 1 at Hoffenheim. The 21-year-old Belgian brings a lot of calm to the defence. achtzehn99.de spoke to the goalkeeper ahead of this weekend's meeting with VfL Wolfsburg (15:30 CET kick-off) about the praise he has received from Markus Gisdol, his role models and the ‘Wolves'.

Hi Koen, the team played more defensively against Gladbach. That was rewarded with just one goal conceded and a victory. Will a clean sheet follow in Wolfsburg?

Koen Casteels: (laughs) That is always our aim, but it's not easy. Plus, football is missing something without goals. The game against Gladbach was a step in the right direction for us in terms of defensive stability. But we will and have to continue along the right path in an attacking sense as well.

Markus Gisdol praised you in his press conference ahead of the Gladbach game. How do you see your own development?

Casteels: Obviously it's difficult to assess yourself. The here and now is important for me, I don't want to look too far ahead. I don't know what's around the corner. Nevertheless, my aim is always to improve. My main focus at the moment is to ensure my performances maintain a high level.

Do you have any goalkeeping role models? Do you look at the keepers differently when you're watching a match on television?

Casteels: Yes, especially in my youth. But it was and is about the little things. What do they do here, what do they do there. I observe other goalkeepers and focus on their strengths – one is good at coming out, another is good in one-on-one situations. There isn't one goalkeeper that I look to learn everything from.

The last meeting in Wolfsburg ended 2-2. Naldo headed in an equaliser shortly before the end. Would you be happy with a draw this time?

Casteels: As a footballer, it's in my nature to always want to win, but that certainly won't be easy in Wolfsburg. What we can be happy with will depend on how the game goes. A lot can happen in 90 minutes.

The ‘Wolves' have picked up two clear wins at home this season. How do you rate them and what kind of game are you expecting?

Casteels: Wolfsburg have a lot of good players in their squad and their strengths lie in attack. Naldo is very dangerous when it comes to set-pieces. I think we'll see a very attacking and good game of football.
