August 16th – A special day for Hoffenheim

Five years ago today on August 16th 2008, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim played their first game in the Bundesliga. At 15:30 CET, referee Guido Winkmann started the game in Energie Cottbus' stadium, and 90 minutes later Hoffenheim had their first Bundesliga victory. A brace from Vedad Ibisevic and a goal from Demba Ba helped TSG to a 3-0 away win.

August 16th 1888:Pharmacist John Pemberton died in Atlanta. A year earlier, Pemberton patented a drink recipe, one that has reached incomparable triumphs around the world today: Coca-Cola.

August 16th 1929:Helmut Rahn was born. On July 4th 1954, the most memorable words in the history of German football were uttered: “Rahn will have to shoot from distance here. Rahn shoots. Goal, goal, goal, goal.” Herbert Zimmerman was the man commentating Germany's winner (3-2) against Hungary in the World Cup final in Bern. It was Helmut Rahn's crowning moment.

August 16th 1958:Madonna Louise Ciccone was born. 55 years later and Madonna has become the biggest female pop star on the planet. In 2008, the singer and actress was enrolled in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Happy Birthday!

August 16th 1960:Long before Austrian Felix Baumgartner jumped to the earth under the watchful eye of the world, Joseph Kittinger tried it. On this day in 1960, as part of the Excelsior project, Kittinger jumped from a height of 102,800 feet toward earth. He free fell for over four minutes and reached speeds of nearly 620 mph.

August 16th 1977:On Madonna's 19th birthday, years before she became a world superstar, the “King” died. Elvis Presley was found dead at his residence in Graceland. The most successful single artist of all time was buried there under special permission. “Elvis Presley's death takes a piece of our country with him,” said then US president Jimmy Carter.

August 16th 2009:The jam-packed Olympic Stadium in Berlin was privy to one of the most incredible performances in sport. It was the World Championship in Athletics and the 100-metre final was next up. Usain Bolt ran it in 9.58 seconds. “He breaks all the dimensions that every human being once thought to be possible... Where has he landed? In the Milky Way...” bellowed the Eurosport commentator into his microphone.
