Niklas Süle: “I want to get stuck in”

On the pitch, he plays like a veteran. It's hard to believe that Niklas Süle is only 17 years old. Since Markus Gisdol has been in charge at Hoffenheim, the towering 6'3” centre back has become a regular part of the team. achtzehn99.de spoke to the Hoffenheim youth player about the next step in his career, the relegation play-off of last season and his aims at TSG.

Niklas, you have quickly become a member of the first team. What do you think that was down to?

I took my first training session with the professional team at 15 years old and have always been competing in older age groups. In terms of athleticism and understanding the game, I've always been a part of the next level.

The jump to the professional team is something special though?

Of course, it's a different level here but the more you train with them, the better it goes.

Is your development aided by the fact that there are so many young players in the squad?

Definitely. I am pleased to have been called up by the manager and that he has put his confidence in us. I think it's clear in training though that we are not just young but that we also have the required quality.

Do you get feedback from your manager?

Yes. He takes me to one side and tells me where I need to make improvements and what he expects from me. I have noticed that he wants to promote me and that's important.

You were brought on in the decisive relegation play-off match in Kaiserslautern and had a good game. What did you make of it?

Maybe it didn't appear to be the case but I was as excited as I have ever been. I wasn't expecting to come on so to play thirty minutes was something special. I tried my best to concentrate fully on the game. Maybe the nerves and the tension helped me to remain fully focused.

David Abraham and Jannik Vestergaard are certainly the first two choices at centre back. Where do you see yourself and what goals have you got?

David and Jannik have certainly had more time in the job and have more experience. If I play well in training though, I think I have a chance to play. I want to make the most of the coming season, improve my skills and get stuck in. Of course I want to make as many appearances as possible and hope to become a regular starter.
