U21 Euros: Rudy scores and Volland assists in win over Russia

A semi-final appearance was already out of the question for Germany at the European U21 Championships following defeats in their opening two group games to the Netherlands (3-2) and defending champions Spain (1-0). There was however, a happy end to the campaign, particularly for Hoffenheim trio Sebastian Rudy, Stefan Thesker and Kevin Volland, as they played their part in a 2-1 win over Russia.

Volland and Thesker were both in the starting line-up, while Rudy was introduced at half time. The Germany team looked focused from the start and created the better chances – a direct shot from Volland was just kept out by the Russian keeper. Nevertheless, Germany ended up going behind in the 22nd minute, but didn't let their heads drop. After great work from Volland, who was involved in almost all of Germany's attacks, Patrick Herrmann was able to equalise just 12 minutes later.

It was the same story in the second half. Germany manager Rainer Adrion's side were offering much more going forward. In the end, it was a penalty that provided the winning goal. After a foul on Herrmann, Rudy stepped up to take the penalty and, just as he did in the game against the Netherlands, held his nerve to convert from 12 yards and provide Germany with a departing victory.

Higher hopes

The Germany U21 team went into the competition with bigger aims, but still enjoyed a winning end to their participation. “In principle, there's not too much to be happy about. We wanted to be in the semi-finals. But we took it upon ourselves to win the game today. We wanted to end the competition on a positive note and we've done that,” said Volland after the final whistle.

Goalscorer Sebastian Rudy spoke to achtzehn99.de on Thursday morning: “It was vital that we went into the summer break with a win behind us. Even if we didn't progress, the tournament was an experience that I'll certainly learn a lot from.” Rudy, Volland and Thesker will now all begin a well-deserved holiday.
