TSG training camp in Westerburg – stamina the focus

At around 11 o'clock on Sunday, the Hoffenheim bus arrived at the team's accommodation for the next four days. The Lindner Hotel is situated on the idyllic Lake Wiesen, surrounded by a golf course. For Markus Gisdol's men though there is no time for the luxuries of life. A quarter of an hour later, the players had gathered themselves on the pitch. Four days of hard work start here as the club prepares itself ahead of the new season and the opening weekend of August, when TSG take on SG Aumund-Vegesack in the first round of the German Cup.

After a quick word from Gisdol, the players went for a light jog, amongst other exercises organised by fitness coach Nicklas Dietrich. Copious stretching followed. TSG will undertake three intensive sessions a day, making the slightly relaxed session upon arrival important considering the near two-hour journey. “The training camp is probably best understood with the title of ‘Stamina',” said the manager. “Alongside the emphasis around fitness, we want to make sure we do activities that include work with the ball as well.”

Football at 10am

As the team gathered again in the early afternoon, they were met by 100 fans as the Hoffenheim players finally got their first touches of a ball. Goalkeeping coach Zsolt Petry worked intensively with the three goalkeepers Koen Casteels, Jens Grahl and Tim Paterok, while the outfield players were split into two groups and played a modified version of a 4-on-2 game. After that, there was an extensive game to finish. On Monday morning, the 10 o'clock session will focus on footballing activities.

The sporting end to the day came on the bike for the Hoffenheim players. With mountain bikes they brought to the Westerwald, the group explored the area in their final, physical workout of the day.
