Vukcevic: “Feeling better every day“

There remain just a few more days of rest for the players of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim before they begin pre-season training for the upcoming Bundesliga campaign. Winger Boris Vukcevic has used the time to recover from a foot operation he underwent at the end of the season. The German U21 international now hopes he will be back to his old strengths again when training begins on Monday. Achtzehn99.de caught up with him on holiday in Miami, Florida.

Boris, a few weeks ago a metal plate was removed from your foot after your initial injury. How is the healing process going?

First of all I'm happy that the plate is finally out now. I was having a few problems with it, especially when I put weight on it. But our physios and doctors did a great job with me and got me fit to play. Now I'm feeling better every day and have a few light jogging sessions behind me, which is encouraging.

Apart from recuperating, how have you spent your holidays?

I was in New York for a few days and saw al the sights – there really is so much to do there. I even met Barack Obama, although just the wax figure in Madame Tussaud's! Now I'm enjoying the last few days of my holidays here in Miami.

When do you think you will be fit again?

I'm sticking to the individual training schedule that the club worked out for me. So I'm jogging, am spending some time in the weights room and doing a few strength training exercises too. I'm hoping to be 100% fit again next week.

So you'll be there for Markus Babbel's first training session on Monday?

I expect so yes.

The UEFA European Championships are underway in Poland and the Ukraine. Which team do you think will win the tournament?

There are a few countries that can win the Euros. The two biggest favourites are definitely Germany and Spain, even if neither of them blew anyone away in their first game. Germany have improved a lot since the World Cup two years ago, but the pressure on them has grown as well. We'll see how they cope with it, but I think Germany will come home with the trophy.
