Salihovic: “I always want to progress!”

After his four-match ban, Sejad Salihovic is back in the TSG 1899 Hoffenheim squad ahead of Saturday's 15.30 CET kick-off against Fortuna Düsseldorf. In an interview with achtzehn99.de, the midfielder talks about his time out as well as the required virtues of the Kraichgau side, and is optimistic ahead of the weekend's encounter.

Sali, you were recently suspended for four matches. It's not only a long time, but it was also a turbulent spell for TSG. What do you believe is the cause for such varied performances?

It's not easy to explain the ups and downs. It's clear that we have a young squad and more than anything it's a matter of giving our all. When we do that then we can put up a fight in the league and beat teams like Schalke. If we don't reach that level then it's not enough to win sometimes because all the sides in the Bundesliga have quality.

Describe what it's like to be an onlooker in those situations and not be able to get stuck in on the pitch.

Obviously, watching on is difficult. You always want to play and help the team. If that's not possible then of course it's tough. So the last few weeks have not been easy for me.

What have you contributed whilst being suspended?

I've still tried to involve myself. I was always in the changing room or gave the lads a ring. To be a part of the team and to support them is important to me, even when I can't play.

On Saturday, you return to the squad for the game against Düsseldorf. You'll be hoping to add to last week's performance. What goals have you set yourself for your return?

I always want to progress. I think I am an important player for the team and want to push others on as well, whether I start or come on. I want to help the team as much as possible.

What can you say about Fortuna Düsseldorf?

Düsseldorf are an uncomfortable side to face. They have high levels of fitness and work hard. There is no doubt though, that we are travelling to Düsseldorf with the intention of winning. We are the better team and we want to show that. For that reason, it's important we give everything!
