Delpierre agrees switch to TSG

VfB Stuttgart defender Mathieu Delpierre will join TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on a free transfer at the end of the season. The 30-year-old Frenchman has put pen to paper on a two-year contract.

Able to play either at centre back or at left back, Delpierre arrived at Stuttgart at the beginning of the 2004/05 season from French side Lille OSC. He established himself as a first-team regular under Giovanni Trapattoni and became club captain in 2009. His best season with the club was in 2006/07, when he was part of the team that won the Bundesliga title. He also reached the German Cup Final in the same season, playing alongside current Hoffenheim boss Markus Babbel, as the Swabians lost out to 1. FC Nürnberg.

Babbel said of the deal, “Mathieu is an outstanding defender who will provide some useful stability at the back for us. He is a seasoned professional with good leadership qualities and that will be a great help to our young squad.”
