1899 capture Swiss striker Derdiyok

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim have pulled off a major coup by signing Switzerland international striker Eren Derdiyok from league rivals Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The 23-year-old has signed a contract until June 2016 and will join up with his new teammates at the end of the season. Both clubs declined to disclose details of the fee involved.

Derdiyok, who is of Kurdish origin, was born in Basel and began his career there with BSC Old Boys Basel. In 2005 he moved across the city to join the more established FC Basel, where he won the Swiss Cup in 2007 and the domestic double in 2008. He made his move to Germany the following summer, signing a four-year deal with Leverkusen.

TSG's head coach Markus Babbel said of the transfer: “Eren Derdiyok is a complete striker. He fits the mould perfectly regarding the type of player we want at this club. I'm pleased that we were able to convince him to join:”

Derdiyok made his international debut as early as 2008. He went on to make three appearances at the European Championships later that year and has now amassed 38 caps for his country.
