Looking back on 2011 – Sali's free-kick

2011 was another year in which 1899 Hoffenheim made headlines. There were two managerial changes, as well as reshuffles among the club's top officials and executives. On the pitch, the club ended the first half of the current campaign in 9th place in the table. But it was a memorable year for our players as well, who have been telling achtzehn99.de of their sporting highlights. TSG's Bosnian midfielder Sejad Salihovic lists his free-kick against the Bundesliga's defending Champions as one of his top memories of the year.

It was a free-kick like one you would study in a textbook. 1899's set-piece specialist fairly hammered the ball from all of 30 yards into the top corner, leaving Dortmund's keeper Roman Weidenfeller with no chance. “I caught the ball perfectly”, reminisces Sali. “Of course there's an element of luck to it as well. Quite often it's a very fine margin between finding the top corner and hitting row Z!” It didn't win Bundesliga Goal of the Month, but it certainly stands out as one of the best free-kicks seen in the league for a long time, certainly this season.
