Looking back on 2011: ‘Group of Death'

2011 was another year in which 1899 Hoffenheim made headlines. There were two managerial changes, as well as reshuffles among the club's top officials and executives. On the pitch, the club ended the first half of the current campaign in 9th place in the table. But it was a memorable year for our players as well, who have been telling achtzehn99.de of their sporting highlights. For our Dutch left-back Edson Braafheid, it was the sensational draw for the European Championships next summer.

On December 2nd 2011, the draw for Euro 2012 was made in Nyon, Switzerland, and it threw up some mouth-watering prospects. As with ever tournament, there was a ‘group of death' and this year it was a very intriguing one: Germany, Portugal, Netherlands and Denmark were all draw to face each other in group B. Edson Braafheid, a member of the Holland squad and set to perform for the Oranje at the Euros in Poland and the Ukraine, was excited to be lining up against the country where he now plays his football: ”Of course it's a tough group, but you don't have any easy games in a European Championship. We want to compete for the title and to do that you have to beat the best. We lost 3-0 in a friendly game recently, so revenge is a good motivation for us!” said the Hoffenheim defender.
