Reactions to the match against FC Bayern

1899 Hoffenheim were defeated by FC Bayern München in the closing stages of Tuesday nights match in the Rhein-Neckar-Arena thanks to a Daniel van Buyten goal in injury time. Here is what those involved had to say about the unfortunate 1:2 loss at the hands of the reigning champions.

Ralf Rangnick (1899 Hoffenheim, Manager):

We're obviously very disappointed. The important thing for us now, is to bounce back and set our sights in the right direction. This defeat was frustrating, but we need to forget this game as soon as possible. We could have gone 2:0 up through Salihovic. After that we were unlucky, giving away the lead due to a counter-attack. When you lose in the final minutes because of a goal that should have been given offside, then you're unlucky. When you look at the whole match and the chances both sides had, the defeat doesn't look as bad. However, we need to use the things we did well in this match, which were clear for all to see, and carry them through to the next game.

Louis van Gaal (FC Bayern München, Manager):

We didn't expect to be behind after less than a minute in the match. That made it a lot harder for us. However, despite not winning our last few games the players need to restore the faith they have in themselves. We have already seen they can do that from the performance in the second half. Today luck was on our side. I'm pleased and the players are noticeably relieved. This was a big step for us. Now we need to make sure we win against Mainz or the gap between us will continue growing. Following this win against Hoffenheim the players have rediscovered their confidence. We thoroughly deserved this win against a very difficult side.

Vedad Ibisevic:

Of course, for the team morale it would have been better to take a point from the game. We need to set our sights forward because it won't be any easier against Köln and Mainz. The most difficult thing tonight was that for the whole of the second half we were running towards our own goal. It wasn't easy to get the ball forward, but we did have one or two noteworthy chances.

Mark van Bommel:

The way we scored the winning goal was lucky. However, if you look at the story of the whole game it was a deserved victory.

Sejad Salihovic:

It was difficult to create a lot of chances against Bayern. I felt, though, that we played with a measure of control throughout the match. In the end luck failed us. Looking at the bigger picture we didn't play badly. We've simply got to tick this match off the list and concentrate on the coming matches.

Christian Nerlinger:

The most important thing tonight was that we won a very difficult match. I'm very relieved because we were definitely the better team. Today, it was clear to see that the team spirit is really good right now, something that was also proven during the late win against Wolfsburg.
