An interview with Gylfi Sigurdsson

He came on as a substitute, immediately took a free-kick and as he went to celebrate with the away fans in the Fritz-Walter-Stadion, everyone realised that Hoffenheims' new signing, Gylfi Sigurdsson, had just made his mark on the Bundesliga. achtzehn99.de caught up with the Icelandic international to hear his thoughts on the match.

Gylfi, 20 seconds after coming on as a substitute you managed to put one past Tobias Sippel.

Yes, it was a crazy goal. The manager sent me onto the pitch and told me to take the free-kick. It was the perfect time to score, given that we were 1:2 behind. However, I would have preferred to take all three points instead of scoring a goal. We can still be content with the hard earned point we did win though.

Over the past few weeks you have been with your teammates around the clock. Do you feel you have fully integrated yourself into the team?

It's going really well so far. Most of the lads speak English and they are helping me learn the important German phrases. I have just recently found a house nearby and have settled in well. The guys have also made it really easy for me to settle in as part of the team. I'm also really fond of the area we are in. It's quiet and if I want a little more excitement, I can travel just down the road to Heidelberg. It all fits together.

In your first two matches you only managed to make brief cameo appearances. What is your personal target for the coming months?

Of course I want to play my way into the starting line-up, that's what every player wants to do. However, it is still going to take a little time as I get used to the style of play. We have a very strong team who won our first three matches. Hopefully our good form can continue until the end of the season.

On Tuesday FC Bayern München make the trip to Sinsheim - it will be your first match against the reigning champions.

The match against Bayern will provide a huge challenge. Bayern are one of the biggest and best teams in the world. Hopefully the stadium will be sold out so the fans can really get behind the team. Then it will be a truly emotional and exciting game.
