FSV Mainz 05 match reaction

Read what players and the coach had to say after the 3-2 home win over Mainz.

Julian Nagelsmann: We didn’t get off to a good start. Mainz were the better team in the opening 15 minutes. We improved as the game went on, allowed them fewer chances but still didn’t control the match fully. Mainz were extremely dangerous from counter attacks and showed a lot of physical presence. After the break we found our rhythm and were good in transition from defence to attack. Towards the end of the game I must’ve looked at my watch close to 7000 times and I was very happy when I heard the final whistle.

Martin Schmidt: A defeat never feels good, even though we managed to record wins in our previous three games before today. We lost to a team today, that wanted to win more than us. We had a good start to the match, because we knew we would get chances to counter attack. Our first goal was the perfect counter attack, but we conceded the equaliser immediately afterwards. We lost our drive through the equaliser and lacked precision in our actions in the final third. Hoffenheim played better, which decided the game.

Mark Uth: I trained well during the week and the manager confirmed that to me. It was nice to get the trust and to be able to pay it back with two goals. This was only our first, albeit extremely important three points. We still have a long road ahead of us. Our next game is in Dortmund and it will be a difficult match, but if we keep fighting and playing like today, then we have a chance. Our manager has told us to play attacking football and to have fun on the pitch, which we did. We attacked them early and rarely allowed Mainz to find to their game.

Kevin Volland: This victory has Nagelsmann written all over it. TSG were known for attacking football in the past and we are looking to return to that. We want to play attacking football. It was extremely important to get the equaliser quickly after conceding the opener. Overall I think it was a great performance by all involved. We earned ourselves this hard-fought victory, by being the better team overall.

Nadiem Amiri: We deserved to win today. It was a lot of fun out on the pitch and I think it was fun for the spectators as well. We always looked to produce danger and had the better chances throughout the 90 minutes. Julian Nagelsmann gave us the trust in our abilities.

Alexander Rosen: I’ve known Julian Nagelsmann for six years, while to most others he may be fairly new to the game. I understand all the questions concerning his age, but I’m not at all surprised with the way he is handling himself. I know how competent and emanating he is. He sets an example and the team followed him all the way today. I’m firmly convinced that we will remain in the top flight. Our manager has a lot of trust amongst the fans and the team earned themselves a fair amount of credit themselves today. We all stand behind the team, even if we concede an early goal. The spark carried over from the stands onto the pitch and the other way around again. We are still in an automatic-relegation spot, so there won’t be any excessive celebrations.

Yunus Malli: Our defensive performance wasn’t as compact today as in previous weeks. This was the difference today and was a factor in the loss. Hoffenheim have a good team and if we continue playing like this, they will avoid relegation.
